As an organization, DC Students Speak advocates for specific policies, which are shown before. The below policies were approved by the DC Students Speak Student Board.
An end to the DC Disorderly Conduct Act of 2010 in its current form:
While the idea of a noise ordinance is not problematic in itself, the current DC law unfairly targets students and is needlessly vague without specifying a Decibel limit for what constitutes an “unreasonably loud” noise.
DCSS supports a revision to the law which would specify a Decibel limit and further definitions of “unreasonably loud.”
Continuation of full federal student aid funding, including Pell Grants and Stafford Loan:
A student-friendly environment includes one where students can study and live free of the burden of high-interest loans. DCSS strongly supports the continuation of all federal funding for Pell Grants, Stafford loans, and all other government student financial aid.
Same day voter registration:
DCSS strongly supports the right of every DC resident to register to vote the same day of the occurring election. This right is fundmental to the continued participation of students in the local electoral process and should not be abridged.
Increased student safety measures:
DCSS supports working with local ANCs and all relevant DC government offices to secure increased safety measures relating to lighting and other measures contributing to safe student environment both day and night.
Student-friendly polling station locations:
To encourage maximum student voter electoral participation, DCSS supports the location of polling stations on or near all university campuses.
To promote further student participation, fight voter apathy, and decrease voter intimidation, DCSS supports the right of students to serve as poll-workers throughout the District.
Full voting rights for the District of Columbia:
As advocates for the equal and democratic representation of all people, DCSS supports efforts of the people of DC to secure full voting rights and representation.
We cannot support any system that subjugates voting, taxpaying citizens to a second-class citizenship.
We will not realize shared our vision of collaborative universities and communities until all of DC’s residents achieve full democracy.
